Captain Córdova's Galápagos Adventure

You're invited to join Captain Walter Córdova and his wife Amy Dickerson on this custom small group adventure we created to celebrate our meeting 25 years ago when Amy was hosted on her first Galápagos visit by then tourist yacht Captain (& future husband) Walter.

Over the last 10+ years we have been curating custom group trips on request which became Galapagos Local Tours LLC. We are registered in the USA & exclusively work with Ecuador Min-Tur-registered, locally-owned tours that we personally know offer the best & safest service. See our latest Google reviews.

Together, we've designed this land-based trip to share our favorite Galápagos places, wildlife, and people with a group limited to 9 travelers to join us. This will be the perfect size to reserve private boat charters & land tours. That's a ratio of 1 native host for each 3 travelers--unheard of on most Galapagos tours that feature the maximum-allowed 16 passengers per Galapagos National Park (GNP) guide with no guarantee any guides/hosts are natives. (And in fact, we only plan to host trips personally ourselves once every year or two!)

You’ll be guided by a Galápagos-born native—most days will be our son, Marvi Córdova, who plans to be with us both weeks. Marvi is now a top respected certified GNP naturalist guide working as Expedition Director (supervisor of all guides) on Celebrity’s 100-passenger Flora luxury liner.

Our excursions were chosen by Captain Walter with his most trusted Galapagos native family-owned tour operators from his experience as a yacht captain on Santa Cruz Island. And Amy is using her 500,000-visitor event center managing director background to keep track of the details to make everything smooth for us all.

As you explore, you’ll be meeting & supporting local residents vital to protecting this fragile ecosystem for future generations.

Questions? Amy’s happy to help—before, during, or after your trip. Call/Text +1 402-429-1950 or WhatsApp call/text or email. We’d love to have you join us!

HOW DOES THIS TRIP COMPARE TO HOW MOST VISITORS SEE GALAPAGOS?

  1. Smaller Consistent Group with 3 Travelers to 1 Native Host Ratio--this is a rare opportunity to experience Galapagos more intimately since most tours/cruises operate at the maximum allowed 16 passengers per guide (who may or not be natives) and for land-based tours, also meeting a mixed bag of different passengers each day.

  2. Guaranteed Native Galapagos Guides & Tour Operators--many guides & tour operators in Galapagos are international or mainland-based companies, with guides often imported from the mainland or even from other countries. Not only is this tour hosted by natives a more authentic experience for you as the traveler, but you can feel good you are helping locals maintain Galapagos' unique ecosystem for generations to come.

  3. Tour Customized to Group Members--we will tailor our pace & stops each day of this custom tour to the interests & activity level of our group as we get to know each other before & during the trip vs. the usual standardized Galapagos cruises & tours that are the same each week. And you'll have ample free time as well to easily explore what interests you from our centrally-located lodgings on each island.

  4. Great Value for the Experience--You'll find the pricing is neither the most expensive nor cheapest way to explore Galapagos for this "once-in-a-lifetime" remote destination.

For comparison: Mid-to-lower luxury 16-passenger cruises (that compare to level of hotels we have booked) would run $7,500-15,000 per person for 2 weeks of travel plus your international flight/tips.

Land-based "on your own" tours often end up around $7,500 per person over 2 weeks when one counts all the expenses that add up: meals, taxis, tours, equipment, transport, guides, government fees etc. at similar level of activity of this tour. And of course this way of travel is stressful for the traveler who often has to spend time daily booking tours or navigating the logistics to join impersonal groups with unknown service & safety records--all in a developing country with different language, customs and lack of basic safety protections.

Budget Galapagos travelers you may read about have to spend the same to get to Galapagos but then limit their excursions and just skim the surface of what Galapagos has to offer in natural and human experiences as they self-guide to the few well-trafficked public visitor spots. Or they try to snag last minute cruises on couple weeks' notice with no guarantees of availability or itinerary.

  5. Stress-free All-Inclusive Land-Based Tour--enjoy the freedom and variety of land-based travel while having all the details taken care of and paid for like a cruise or all-inclusive resort would be--even as you get to hop around to explore multiple islands! Included are almost all meals, land/boat transport starting at Ecuador mainland airport, excursion gear, guides, even standard tips are included in this tour. Just get yourself to Ecuador (we can help book this) to meet the group and we'll take care of the rest!

  6. Rare Founder-hosted Cultural Experience--As Walter, Amy and Marvi host your tour there is NO comparable way to explore Galapagos. You'll be accompanied by a local, native & expert-in-Galapagos-tourism family who will introduce you to four generations of Galapagos native family & friends from this unique protected island archipelago. The Córdova family were original settlers in the 1960's (when population was in the dozens) and are now active in today's Galapagos....and its future.

The El Junco Lake Hike & Highlands Tour is a full-day custom tour into the lush highlands of San Cristóbal—from a volcanic lake surrounded by often misty forests to variety of land & sea birds and hands-on coffee-making with local farmers.

Tour Stops & Highlights

Begin your day at a small, locally owned farm in the highlands, where you’ll observe and participate in the traditional Galapagos coffee production process—from bean to bag. Learn how volcanic soil and highland microclimates shape the unique flavor of island-grown coffee.

  • Roast, grind, and bag your own souvenir coffee to take home

  • Hear firsthand from the farmers who preserve this family-centered, sustainable practice

🥾 El Junco Lake Hike
Next, enjoy a gentle 1-mile round-trip hike (with some incline) to El Junco, the only freshwater lake in the Galapagos, nestled in the collapsed caldera of an extinct volcano.

  • Watch for frigatebirds swooping in to rinse the salt from their wings

  • Discover the lush flora and highland birds that thrive in this misty microclimate

  • Learn about the lake’s ecological importance in freshwater collection and conservation

🐢 Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado
Visit the Galapagos National Park’s official Tortoise Breeding and Interpretation Center, dedicated to the endemic giant tortoises of San Cristóbal.

  • Observe these iconic creatures roaming semi-natural enclosures

  • Learn how different tortoise species have evolved on each island

  • Understand the ongoing conservation efforts that protect the future of these gentle giants
(Note: Cerro means “hill,” referring to the natural terrain surrounding the center.)

🍽️ Lunch + Puerto Chino Beach Relaxation
After a morning of discovery, enjoy a delicious local lunch nearby, followed by free time at Puerto Chino, one of San Cristóbal’s most secluded and pristine beaches.

  • Powdery white sand and turquoise waters create the perfect setting to unwind

Full-Day Marine Adventure | Circumnavigate San Cristobal Island | 5 Epic Stops

Experience the ultimate San Cristóbal coastal journey on this iconic 360° Tour on our group's own chartered boat—an exhilarating full-day adventure that takes you on a 70-mile circumnavigation of the entire island.

Designed for nature lovers, photographers, and ocean explorers alike, this tour gives you front-row access to five spectacular sites—both above and below the waterline—though exact stops & their order may vary slightly depending on sea conditions and Galapagos National Park regulations:

  1. Kicker Rock (León Dormido) – The tour’s grand highlight and the most famous snorkeling spot near San Cristóbal. This towering split rock formation offers the chance to see white-tipped reef sharks, Galapagos sharks, sea turtles, rays, and often even hammerhead sharks.

  2. Cerro Brujo (Witch Hill) – We will pass by a gorgeous volcanic formation and beach with turquoise waters, often ideal for spotting sea lions and marine birds in gentle surf for great picture opportunities.

  3. Bahía Sardina (Sardine Bay) – A stunning beach used for a land break, wildlife viewing, or sometimes a quick snorkel depending on conditions.

  4. Punta Pitt – The only place in the Galapagos where you can see all three species of boobies (blue-footed, red-footed, and Nazca) nesting in the same area. No landing here but great spot for our lunch on board with world-class bird watching including the rare red-footed booby possible. This section of the route may also include a traditional Galapagos fishing demonstration, where local experts show you sustainable line techniques passed down through generations.

  5. Bahia Rosa Blanca – A remote white sand beach and small bay on the island’s eastern coast, known for its crystal-clear waters, mangroves, and great chances to see rays, turtles, and juvenile sharks while snorkeling in calm shallows.

Our day begins with a safety briefing before boarding a fully certified vessel equipped with all modern safety gear. As we cruise the wild and rugged coastline, you'll witness the raw beauty of San Cristóbal’s remote cliffs, beaches, and marine life hotspots—many of which are accessible only by boat.

Onboard Experience includes:

  • Fresh hot lunch, featuring usually local fish or chicken, rice, vegetables, dessert, and seasonal fruit

  • Snacks and hot/cold drinks served throughout the tour

  • Alcoholic beverages (beer, cocktails) available for purchase

After your final snorkel, relax on the ride back to port with the ocean breeze and unforgettable views before drop-off back at our hotel.

This is the ultimate way to see San Cristóbal—by sea, with a front-row seat to nature’s wildest show.

Today, you'll really start to enjoy the fact you've timed your Galapagos adventure when the ocean tends to be at its warmest (a comfy 77 degrees F) and calmest--a great time to snorkel & travel by boat for those of us that don't get to do this all the time!

Half-Day Adventure | Scenic Hike, Swimming & Kayaking | Boat Return

Spend a relaxed morning exploring one of the most breathtaking beaches in the Galapagos—Tortuga Bay, named after the black sea turtles that nest along its shores. This guided experience combines land and sea, giving you the chance to hike, swim, kayak, and soak in the natural beauty of Santa Cruz’s southern coast.

Tour Highlights

🧭 Guided Nature Walk to Tortuga Bay
Begin with a scenic 45-minute guided hike (approx. 2.5 km) through lava fields, dry forest, and cactus groves as our naturalist guide Marvi shares insights into the unique flora and fauna that thrive in this coastal ecosystem where he was born. (Boat ferry option available if preferred.)

🛶 Kayaking (Optional)
Explore the tranquil bay by kayak usually available for short rental. Paddle among mangroves, marine birds, and possibly encounter baby sharks or sea turtles in the shallows. (Guest pay)

Marine life here is limited compared to deeper snorkel sites, but you may spot juvenile fish, rays, or turtles close to shore plus shore birds.

**Note: no services at this visitor site so we'll use the restrooms before we go & stop by a store if you'd like to bring some snacks & beverages. We'll need to bring all our trash out.

Farewell to our Week 1 Only Travelers / Guided Transfers to USA flights

DeparturePuerto Ayora Hotel to GPS Baltra Island AirportSunday, Mar 8, 20267:30 am
DestinationUIO Quito AirportSunday, Mar 8, 2026~2 pm

Remember the movie Planes, Trains & Automobiles?

Guided ~90-minute journey to GPS Baltra Airport includes:

  • Private group transport pickup at hotel with your luggage to drive 40 min. north across Santa Cruz Island

  • Catch quick water ferry across Canal Itabaca to Baltra Island (restroom here at ferry pier if can't wait 30-45 min.)

  • Hop on airport bus for 10 min. drive across Baltra Island--watch for land iguanas. This was a WWII airbase built by the USA to watch for Japanese plains heading to the Panama Canal--the military left in a hurry, so this is why no walking allowed on this "mine field" of an island.

Guided Check-in at the GPS Baltra Airport

We'll help you with the extra steps to leave the Galápagos National Park:

  • Galapagos National Park scans all your bags to make sure no natural souvenirs

  • 2nd 1/2 of your Galapagos Transit Control Card (TCT) you've been saving in your passport now required to check-in at the airline counter

  • Check-in bags, get boarding pass with airline

  • Go through airport security where your 2nd 1/2 of TCT collected

Relax before you flight to Quito

  • Couple nice coffee/breakfast places @ Baltra airport--recommended as only a beverage on the flight and you're 3-4 hours before your next meal

  • High-end & local souvenir shops before & after security

  • Might want to buy beverage/snacks for the ~3 hours between two plane rides (you'll likely make quick stop in GYE Guayaquil but not allowed off).

  • While waiting in Baltra airport--can read signs about the design behind this world-leading eco-friendly airport

lightbulb icon

PHOTO OPS:

  • This newly-opened eco-friendly Baltra GPS airport makes for interesting shots as walking out to your plane on the tarmac with cactus, iguanas.

  • You have last chance for your "in front of the plane on tarmac" photo--have your group be ready to do quickly inside the marked walking lines before airport staff shoos you away.

QUITO AIRPORT

See Day 15 for Quito Airport Departure Service that will be provided by Galapagos local Tony Sotomayor to help you in the Quito Airport to meet your USA flight tonight.

Isabela Wetlands (Humedales) & Wall of Tears Tour

DateMonday, Mar 9, 202611 am
Duration~5 hours

Half-Day Active Tour | Hiking & Biking | Giant Tortoises, Lava Landscapes & Birdlife

Discover Isabela Island’s rich natural habitats and conservation legacy on this active half-day tour through The Wetlands and the Giant Tortoise Breeding Center. Combining hiking and biking at our group's own pace, this private excursion offers a hands-on introduction to Isabela’s ecology, volcanic terrain, and native wildlife—all guided by Marvi, our certified Galapagos naturalist.

Tour Highlights

🐢 Giant Tortoise Breeding Center (Centro de Crianza Arnaldo Tupiza)
Begin your tour with a guided visit to Isabela’s tortoise breeding center, operated by the Galapagos National Park. Walk through shaded trails while learning about the life cycle, threats, and recovery efforts for the iconic Galapagos Giant Tortoises that give the archipelago its name.

  • See tortoises of all ages and subspecies, from hatchlings to full-grown adults

  • Learn how the breeding program focused on Isabela's unique endemic tortoises helps reintroduce healthy individuals into the wild

  • Spot flamingos and native birds along nearby lagoons

🚴‍♀️ Guided Bike Ride Through the Wetlands
From the breeding center, hop on a bike and begin your journey through Isabela’s Wetlands Park, a protected coastal area rich in biodiversity and volcanic scenery. Ride along 3.7 miles of natural trails, stopping to explore historic and geological points of interest—some with short, moderate hikes to lookout points and hidden pools.

Stops may include:

  • El Cerro Orchilla (Purple Lichen Hill)

  • El Estero (The Estuary)

  • La Poza Escondida (Hidden Pool)

  • Poza Redonda (Circle Pool)

  • Túnel del Estero (Estuary Tunnel)

  • Playa del Amor (Love Beach)

  • Mirador de Los Tunos (Tunos Lookout)

  • Pozas Verdes (Green Pools)

  • La Playita (Little Beach)

At Muro de las Lágrimas (Wall of Tears), your guide will share the history of this man-made stone wall, built by prisoners during Isabela’s penal colony era—a striking contrast to the natural beauty around it.

🦩 Wetlands Wildlife & Flora
As you bike and hike through this unique ecosystem, your guide will help you spot flamingos, ducks, black-necked stilts, gallinules, oystercatchers, and more. The mangrove forests and brackish pools support ghost crabs, fiddler crabs, and fascinating endemic plants like palo santo, muyuyo, and three types of mangroves (red, white, and black).

We'll stop for a simple picnic-style lunch as part of the tour at a good point. Water and preferred snack suggested in your fanny or back pack. Bikes & bike helmets provided.

Half-Day Boat Tour | Snorkeling & Geological Walk | Isabela Island’s Hidden Gem

Venture into one of the Galapagos’ most spectacular underwater worlds on this unforgettable half-day speedboat excursion to Cabo Rosa, more commonly known as Los Túneles.

Only recently opened as an official visitor site by the Galapagos National Park, this tour combines world-class snorkeling, a short lava formation hike, and up-close encounters with iconic wildlife—both above and below the surface.

This is Isabela Island’s must-do daily marine tour on the newest boat on Isabela that happens to be owned by Walter's niece & her husband, Romero, who was born on Isabela. They run a leading travel agency focused on Isabela experiences.

Tour Highlights

🛥️ Boat Ride Along the Western Coastline
Departing from Puerto Villamil’s main town pier, enjoy a 40-minute speedboat ride along Isabela’s dramatic western coastline. Your journey offers scenic views of volcanic terrain and turquoise waters, with a brief stop at Roca Unión—a favored nesting site for masked boobies, often viewable from the boat.

🌋 Los Túneles Lava Formations
Arrive at the main attraction: Los Túneles, a surreal network of lava bridges, open tunnels, and natural arches formed by ancient volcanic flows from Sierra Negra Volcano.

  • Navigate the boat through this maze-like lava landscape

  • Disembark for a short 10–15 minute guided hike across the formations

  • Spot coastal birds resting or nesting among the arches

🤿 El Finado Snorkeling Site
End your tour with a peaceful snorkeling session in El Finado, a calm, clear-water cove tucked among mangroves.

  • Swim alongside sea turtles, reef fish, rays, and white-tipped reef sharks resting along the sandy bottom

  • If you’re lucky, your guide may help you spot seahorses hidden among the seagrass

  • Perfect for all skill levels thanks to its calm, shallow waters protected by the "tunnels" lava formations at the coast

Onboard Experience includes:

You'll have time after your morning boat tour to have lunch, relax & explore this small village and amazing beach at your own pace. Options include:

  • Walk the main sand street of the village--there is a nice expresso cafe, good bakery, fresh empanadas, fruit bowls/smoothies and more plus a nice central park to explore

  • There is a fruit bowl/smoothie food truck on the main sand street which makes HUGE bowls from wide variety of fresh fruits--try some you can't get at home!

Choose your volcano hike--more leisurely along the rims of two volcanoes OR descend down into the largest caldera on the Galapagos

Choose Your Sierra Negra Volcano Hike

DateWednesday, Mar 11, 20267:30 am
Duration~6 hours including lunch

Half-Day Hiking Adventure | Geological Wonders | Farm-to-Table Lunch

Isabela Island is home to Sierra Negra, one of the most awe-inspiring volcanic formations in the Galápagos—and the most accessible.

Towering above the island’s southern highlands, Sierra Negra’s massive caldera and dynamic volcanic landscape offer a chance to witness the Earth in motion, with panoramic coastal views, lava flows, and even active fumeroles depending on your route.

On this flexible adventure, you can choose between two unforgettable ~3 hour hiking experiences, based on your preferred activity level. Both groups reunite afterward for a delicious local lunch at a nearby farm, where volcanic soil and island traditions come together.

Choose Your Trail

🥾 Option 1: Sierra Negra + Chico Volcano Ridge Walk
Mild to Moderate Hike | Great for All Ages

Walk along the outer rim of Sierra Negra, enjoying expansive views of Isabela’s eastern coastline and the surreal lava landscapes below. Continue on to Volcán Chico, a parasitic cone with alien-like terrain and hints of past eruptions.

·       Total distance: ~6.2 miles round trip

·       Terrain: Mostly flat with gentle inclines

·       Highlights: Caldera viewpoints, lava fields, endemic plants, and panoramic ocean vistas

🌋 Option 2: Sierra Negra Descent to Sulfur Mines
Challenging Hike | For Adventurous Travelers

For a more intense trek, descend into the Sierra Negra caldera to visit the “sulfur mines”—a natural thermal area with active fumeroles and colorful mineral deposits. This route gives you a closer look at volcanic activity, tectonic features, and the ever-changing earth beneath your feet.

·       Total distance: ~7.4-8.7 miles round trip

·       Terrain: Steep and rugged, can be hot and muddy

·       Highlights: Steam vents, volcanic chemistry, surreal geology, and few crowds

Why Sierra Negra Is So Special

With dimensions ranging from 25-37 miles wide and 4.4 to 6.1 miles in length, Sierra Negra is the largest and shallowest caldera in the Galápagos. Though often claimed to be the second largest caldera in the world (it's not), it still ranks among the top 50 largest calderas globally.

Its elliptical shape and geologic history—marked by repeated collapses, uplift, and deformation—make it one of the best places to learn about the volcanic origins of the islands.

🍽️ Farm-to-Table Lunch

After the hike, both groups come together for a fresh, locally sourced lunch at a highland farm near the trailhead.

·       Enjoy Galapagos-grown produce, grilled proteins, and seasonal fruit

·       Vegetarian options available

·       Relax, recharge, and take in the scenic highland surroundings

NEW Cormorant Beach Day Boat Tour

DepartureThursday, Mar 12, 20267 am
DestinationThursday, Mar 12, 20264 pm

Exclusive Boat Tour | NEW National Park Visit Site | Wildlife, Snorkeling & Cliffside Hike

You'll be among the first travelers to explore Cormorant Beach (Playa de los Cormoranes)—a newly opened Galápagos National Park visitor site on the remote and wild west coast of Isabela Island. This type of visit site was once accessible only to cruise ship guests--this extraordinary coastline site is now open to land-based adventurers via a small number of authorized charter boats.

Isabela’s Hidden Coastal Sanctuary

This rare corner of the archipelago features dramatic lava cliffs, untouched white sand beaches, and glassy turquoise waters, surrounded by thriving marine life and some of the most iconic and hard-to-find Galapagos species.

Expect encounters with:

  • The Galápagos flightless cormorant—found nowhere else on Earth but this rugged western coast

  • Galápagos penguins, who form the largest colony in the islands here

  • Galapagos' unique underwater-feeding Marine Iguanas found on the rocks & if you're lucky swimming in the water

  • Tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, and possibly fur seals or orcas along the journey

  • Land iguanas during a short guided hike along the volcanic terrain

Seabird activity is rich in this area, with regular sightings of blue-footed boobies, "red balloon-throated" frigatebirds, herons, and more—set against a backdrop of towering lava cliffs and untouched shoreline.

Tour Experience

🛥️ Scenic Speedboat Transfer
Depart from Puerto Villamil aboard a modern, Ministry of Tourism-certified speedboat, operated by a trusted locally owned charter with full Galapagos National Park permissions (yes, Walter's niece Mayela & Romero's new boat!). With only 12 passengers per departure, this intimate experience allows for personalized guiding and uncrowded access.

🐦 Wildlife Viewing & Cliffside Hike
After a scenic cruise along the western coast including a short stop at Roca Union for seabird sighting including blue-footed & Nazca (masked) boobies coming or going.

You’ll disembark at Playa Cormorán for a guided multi-modal tour—spotting flightless cormorants nesting, land iguanas sunning, and penguins darting through the shallows.

DepartureFriday, Mar 13, 20269 am

At least our luggage will head to the hotel for secure storage, we likely will need to wait for check-in.

HANG OUT TIME BEFORE LUNCH

(2-2.5 hours)

Options before lunch:

  • Easily walk on your own to shops along main drag & won't get lost--even if your first day exploring--for souvenirs while waiting for lunch. We'll probably send our guide Marvi with this group & he can point out other local sites such as artisan market, former fisherman's dock, city offices.

  • Right where we arrive at the downtown piers are great spot to see baby sharks, fish, sea lions, birds.

  • There is also a beautiful cafe on 2nd floor of ProInsular Market right in front of the speedboat ferry pier which is great people-watching spot of the busy downtown pier area--can you pick out the fishermen from the cargo shipments from the cruise passengers from the land-based visitors?

  • Anyone who hasn't already welcome to visit Amy & Walter's home a bit up the perpendicular street and possibly meet his mom Maria and sister Blanca among other family.

Group Dinner & Last Souvenir Shopping

DateFriday, Mar 13, 2026

We'll see what everyone is in the mood for the last night!

If you have your heart set on certain souvenirs, last chance before limited to Galapagos and Quito airport offerings that don't benefit locals and likely more expensive & limited.

If you haven't already, walk out on the piers downtown to see small sharks, fish. Benches often taken back local sea lions who feel they own the place for some reason. There is free WiFi at the piers.

Guided Transfer from Puerto Ayora Hotel to GPS Baltra Airport & Flight Check-in

DepartureSanta Cruz Island HotelSaturday, Mar 14, 2026~7:30 am
DestinationGPS Baltra Island AirportSaturday, Mar 14, 20269 am

We'll pick you up at your hotel & take you for the 75-90 min journey north to the GPS Airport on Baltra Island. (See Day 9 fuller description)

At the airport we will assist you with special processes to depart the Galápagos National Park including:

  1. Bio-security inspection of your luggage (no natural souvenirs allowed!) before you check in with airline.

  2. Collection of 2nd 1/2 of your Galapagos TCT (Transit Control Card) you've been saving in your passport from entry.

lightbulb icon

TIP: Suggest have a nice coffee/beverage & hot meal at the GPS Baltra airport after complete check-in due to ~4 hours from your next meal with flight stopover at Guayaquil to leave/pick up passengers usually.

There is no meal & limited beverage service on Galapagos flights so also good idea to bring water & snacks.

PHOTO OPS ALERT:

  1. Watch from Baltra airport bus for land iguanas

  2. Watch out your airplane windows as approach Quito Airport--Quito is ringed by mountains, may get a great shot!

Flight UIO Quito to USA

  • Your e-ticket will be attached here.

  • Your flight's on-time status will be at live link here with ability to choose text alerts for changes.

Welcome back to Quito Airport

By the time you collect your luggage from your Galapagos flight and make your way from the domestic to the international terminal, you might have about ~6 hours between your flights in UIO Quito airport.

Plan on starting your check in process ~3 hours before your USA flight departure to check any bags with your airline, go through passport control and regular airport security as there can be delays due to internet/electricity outages, airline kiosk breakdowns/shortages.

Good opportunity to do your last souvenir shopping and get a nice hot meal plus snacks/beverages to take with you both before and after security.

info icon

Most departing Galápagos visitors wait in the Quito airport for their Ecuador to USA flight as you're a full hour from central Quito (think like Denver airport) with nothing to visit near the airport but hotels.

Side note: Good thing the new Quito airport moved outside the ring of mountains around Quito. This airport used to be one of the most difficult to take off / land in the world set inside a tight ring of mountains in 2nd highest altitude capital city in world. (Yep, Amy did that multiple times, don't tell her mom. ;-) )

ABOUT GALÁPAGOS

From Galapagos Conservancy:

"The Galapagos Islands are home to some of the highest levels of endemism (species found nowhere else on earth) anywhere on the planet. About 80% of the land birds you will see, 97% of the reptiles and land mammals, and more than 30% of the plants are endemic. More than 20% of the marine species in Galapagos are found nowhere else on earth. Favorites include the giant Galapagos tortoise, marine iguana, flightless cormorant, and the Galapagos penguin — the only penguin species to be found in the Northern Hemisphere."

**Note: this itinerary has chance to see all of these favorites if go both weeks.

MORE TO COME

We'll suggest more Galápagos books & websites here if you like to read up before/during your trip to add to your getting into the "like the natives" experience...or you can just enjoy what your native guides share as we go!
