Twenty six years ago Amy was hosted on her first Galápagos visit by then tourist yacht Captain (& future husband) Walter and we have had our hearts & lives in both the Galapagos & the USA as we raised our family together.
Over the last 10+ years we have been curating custom group trips on request by friends & family. We re-launched in 2025 as Galapagos Local Tours LLC. We are registered in the USA & exclusively work with Ecuador Ministry of Tourism (MinTur)-registered, local family-owned where possible tours & suppliers that we personally know offer the best & safest service. See our latest Google reviews.
Together, along with our Galapagos National Park-certified Naturalist Guide son Marvi Cordova, we've designed this land-based trip to share our favorite Galápagos places via your interests in snorkeling, swimming & hiking. By the end of the trip, you'll be able to add boating to that list as the Galapagos archipelago requires them to get up close to the best wildlife & landscapes!
We've prioritized helping you see these wildlife you mentioned as up close as possible: Galapagos giant land tortoises, Galapagos penguins, Blue-footed Boobies, Frigate birds, Sea Lions, Green Sea Turtles, Rays and Sharks, among many more.
Galapagos is a mysterious, remote location with lots of differences even by island on how to get around so you'll see we've reserved Marvi to be your family's guide for your entire time in Galapagos as required by the Galapagos National Park at most visit sites. That means you'll be on mostly private land tours or when on the 12-16 passenger boats that usually carry one guide for all guests to share you'll have your private sub-group while in the water snorkeling for a much more intimate experience.
Marvi will also be there for all your transfers & transport to manage to make your travel as seamless and safe as possible. You'll see we've designed in free time to explore on your own after you're oriented on each island and/or for you to request Marvi to arrange for whatever activity sounds good to you each day during your free time.
That can include sending the kids off with Marvi while the parents might like to relax at the hotels (which all have gorgeous pool areas) or whatever you feel like doing! Free time activities choices included have been specified in your program (many are included!).
Most uniquely of all, Marvi is a Galapagos National Park-certified photographer who has the latest equipment to capture your family's adventures on land and even under water. You'll receive all your family's Galapagos adventure photos & video files on a thumb drive before you leave Galapagos to share right away.
Our excursions were chosen under the watchful eye of our "Safety Officer", Captain Walter, with his most trusted Galapagos native family-owned tour operators from his experience as a yacht captain on Santa Cruz Island. And Amy is using her 500,000-visitor event center managing director background to keep track of the details to make everything smooth for your group. And Marvi is consulting on the final plans using his 18 years' experience being a Galapagos naturalist guide, most recently as Expedition Director managing all the guides on the 100-person luxury liner Flora operated by Celebrity. Marvi will be able to adjust your tour daily based on your family's interests and energy level.
As you explore, you’ll be meeting & supporting local residents vital to protecting this fragile ecosystem for future generations.
Questions? Amy’s happy to help as the VP of Client Services—before, during, or after your trip. Call/Text +1 402-429-1950 or WhatsApp call/text or email. We look forward to helping you explore Galapagos on this usually once-in-a-lifetime trip!

A LITTLE HOMEWORK TONIGHT:
IMPORTANT: In Quito, prepare your carry-ons to have a couple days' clothes, bathroom & medical gear & wetsuit/snorkel gear for the kids as needed for your first couple days on Isabela Island in a couple smaller carry-on bags you can prioritize to go with you for sure.
This is just in case your larger checked-type bag or even some of the carry-ons don't make the tiny 9-passenger inter-island airplane flight due to weight restrictions.
This will avoid the stress of trying to move belongings between bags during the short connection at the GPS Baltra airport when you first arrive to Galapagos. Any bags that might not make your Isabela flight will follow you shortly on next flights.
by Galápagos native Tony Sotomayor
He will guide you personally through the extra steps at the UIO Quito airport to enter the Galapagos National Park as a UNESCO World Heritage-protected site:
Get Galapagos Transit Control Card (TCT) ($20pp cost included with tour) as part of the Galápagos ecosystem protections.
There is also extra baggage Galapagos bio-security inspection & declaration before you can complete normal check in with the airline & go through airport security.
He also has tight working relationships with the airlines to get your boarding passes & baggage tags without your having to be in the airline kiosk and counter lines.
Be sure to take a picture of your TCT and keep the last 1/2 of it in your passport to give as you depart Galapagos or you'll have to go through TCT process again on departure from Galapagos.

With your GLT Domestic Flights Upgrade remember we'll take care of your Galapagos domestic flights from purchase to smoothly fit your itinerary to confirmed purchase & seat assignment, baggage fees, boarding passes & flight changes in an environment of klugey websites/airport kiosks & oversold flights where passengers bumped often during Galapagos busy seasons like August is.

Your flight's on-time status will be available from the live link here with ability to choose text alerts for flight schedule changes.

WELCOME TO ECUADOR'S GALAPAGOS ISLANDS PROVINCE!!
You are now entering the Galápagos National Park--actually, 97% of this world-unique island archipelago is protected within the Galapagos National Park (GNP).
Here are the GNP rules for visitors so you can help keep this world-unique ecosystem safe:
Your guide for your Galapagos adventure, Marvi Cordova, (on R in photo) will meet you on your LATAM flight during the Guayaquil quick layover. He will guide you from here throughout your Galapagos adventure!
Marvi was born on the islands, went to high school in San Diego (fully bilingual e.g. can make jokes on the fly!) & has been a certified Galapagos National Park Naturalist Guide for 18 years. He now works as an Expedition Leader supervising guides for a 100-passenger leading luxury cruise liner run by Celebrity.
He is a dad of a 15-year-old son (see pics) w/ a fun guiding style that will impart a lot of scientific info. He's also a Galapagos National Park-certified photographer & videographer that will provide you with digital photo/video files on a thumb drive of your trip, both on land & from underwater snorkeling--this is usually only included on top-end luxury cruises.
Small detail--Marvi is our son actually so we can vouch for him! We are biased, but he really has become one of the leading naturalist guides on the Galapagos Islands, so we are pleased he could arrange to spend the 11 days to serve as more than your family's guide, but as our on-the-ground "Expedition Leader" able to make on-the-fly customizations for your trip as you go and as he gets to know you all better.
He will also act as our "Safety Officer", trained by Captain Walter himself, to make sure every transfer to step on/off boats, snorkeling or hike outing and boat/ground transport trip are conducted with the utmost safety in this developing country where regulations/safety standards are loose at best & lawsuits rare--all of which we take for granted in USA help keep us safe.
Most of all, you'll enjoy Marvi's fun, laid-back Galapagos style while fully understanding your USA-based culture/experience to draw helpful comparisons & adjustments for you!
CONTACTING MARVI DURING THE TRIP
When Marvi is not with you, he is staying nearby in town (not at your hotels) but is always available by cell/Wifi WhatsApp call or text:
Please put this number in each adult's cell phone now:
Guide Marvi Cordova cell: +593 99-092-5268 (for use during the trip--before the trip please contact Amy)
If urgent, please call Marvi as easy to miss texts.
If you can't reach Marvi, you can always call Amy as well: +1 402-429-1950 (cell or wifi WhatsApp)

You will disembark down plane stairs onto the tarmac of this one-runway airport.
**PHOTO OP: great quick group photo spot with the plane on tarmac before continue walking on tarmac to airport building (stay in painted pedestrian area)

**TIP: If you would like a souvenir stamp in your passport from the park, can do this here as pay your park entry fee--though check if your country might invalidate your passport.
There may be quick GNP carry-on baggage inspection scan
Proceed to baggage claim: Expect to wait for dog inspection of all bags before you are allowed to grab your bag. (There is a restroom here)

Marvi will take you through the check-in process for your next flight to Isabela--and be flying with you!
Galapagos will quickly relax you into a safe "small town" feeling.
Still, it's good practice on any transfers on the Galapagos as staff help with your luggage, always keep with you at all times:
valuables
passport, medicines, wallet, money belt etc.
personal backpack/bag
w/ tour essentials like sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, rain jacket, bottle of water etc.
in the unlikely case luggage is momentarily misplaced and/or hard to access what you need easily during that day's tour/transport.

IMPORTANT: In Quito, prepare a couple carry-ons to have a couple days' belongings your family needs, including snorkel gear for the kids, just in case your larger bag & even some of the carry-ons don't make the flight and follow you shortly on next flights.
More to come on luggage for all your Galapagos flights in your Packing List PDF.
(Note: can't live link this flight, it's not available on the international flight database.)

Be sure to ask questions about the town as you go to get oriented--restaurants, cafes, shops, beach/swim spots.
Talk with Marvi about what you'd like to do the rest of the afternoon including potentially a peek at the Flamingo Lagoon located adjacent to the village main square is a nice way to get to know this charming little town.
As always, let Marvi know what type of food you are interested in for any dinners and lunches not included in tours and he can get reservations if needed & work out how to get there--by foot, by taxi/van.
Meals and transport to/from meals is guest pay, but Marvi is available to arrange for you.
If you'd like Marvi to join you for any of these free time meals to continue picking his brain or use his help to select & communicate your order in Spanish as usually required, he is available as your guest to eat with you.

Disembark for a short 10–15 minute guided hike across the formations
Spot coastal birds resting or nesting among the arches

Half-Day Hiking Adventure | Geological Wonders
Isabela Island is home to Sierra Negra, one of the most awe-inspiring volcanic formations in the Galápagos—and the most accessible.
Towering above the island’s southern highlands, Sierra Negra’s massive caldera and dynamic volcanic landscape offer a chance to witness the Earth in motion, with panoramic coastal views, lava flows, and even active fumeroles depending on your route.
Sierra Negra Descent to "Sulfur Mines"
Challenging Hike | For Adventurous Travelers
For this more intense trek, you'll descend into the Sierra Negra caldera to visit the “sulfur mines”—a natural thermal area with active fumeroles and colorful mineral deposits. This route gives you a closer look at volcanic activity, tectonic features, and the ever-changing earth beneath your feet.
· Total distance: ~5 miles round trip
· Terrain: Steep and rugged, can be hot and muddy.
Trail down/up the caldera is made from volcanic sand, pea gravel that can be a bit slippery on incline portion. In caldera you might walk on volcanic sand, ashes, and lava boulders as see in pics.
· Highlights: Steam vents, volcanic chemistry, surreal geology, and few crowds
With dimensions ranging from 25-37 miles wide and 4.4 to 6.1 miles in length, Sierra Negra is the largest and shallowest caldera in the Galápagos. Though often claimed to be the second largest caldera in the world (it's not), it still ranks among the top 50 largest calderas globally.
Its elliptical shape and geologic history—marked by repeated collapses, uplift, and deformation—make it one of the best places to learn about the volcanic origins of the islands.

Tour Highlights
🧭 Guided Nature Walk to Tortuga Bay
Begin with a scenic ~45-minute guided mostly flat (except the stairs entrance) paver trail walk (approx. 2.5 km) through lava fields, dry forest, and cactus groves as our naturalist guide shares insights into the unique flora and fauna that thrive in this coastal ecosystem.
🌊 Playa Brava & Playa Mansa
Arrive at the dramatic white sands of Playa Brava, a long open beach with powerful surf and sweeping views where you'll find marine iguanas sunning and sea birds running & diving & no human swimming due to strength of currents.
Then continue to the calmer Playa Mansa, a sheltered bay with shade trees perfect for swimming, relaxing, and optional water activities where you sometimes encounter baby hammerhead sharks.
🛶 Kayaking (Optional)
Explore the tranquil Playa Mansa bay by kayak usually available for short rental. Paddle among mangroves, marine birds, and possibly encounter baby sharks or sea turtles in the shallows. (guide pays if requested)
🐠 Beach Wildlife Spotting
Marine life here is limited compared to deeper snorkel sites, but you may spot juvenile fish, rays, or turtles close to shore plus shore birds.
**Note: no bathroom or concession services at this pristine visitor site so use the restrooms before you go & stop by a store if you'd like to bring some snacks & beverages. Will need to bring all your trash out.

Roger does Ecuador/Peru fusion combined with his Michelin restaurant training while using the best of local, fresh seafood & produce. The Tiradita is Amy's favorite for you to try paired with their own Pisco Sour. Tell them that Amy & Walter sent you for an especially warm welcome...or better yet Marvi can introduce you!

Two Stunning Island Stops | Comfortable Local Yacht | Major Bird Nesting Site | Remote Sea Turtle Nesting Beach
🚤 Travel aboard a locally owned, first-class day-tour yacht carrying up to 16 guests with a warm captain & crew and a Galápagos National Park–certified naturalist guide. Enjoy a stable ride, A/C indoor lounge, outdoor decks, and all the essentials for a perfect full-day adventure.
Today gives you a taste of the small-cruise experience required to reach some of the most remote National Park sites — without having to sleep on a boat or bump along on a small speedboat.
North Seymour Island – known for having one of the largest nesting colonies of Magnificent Frigatebirds and Blue-footed Boobies. This popular day-trip destination offers flat, easy hiking trails to see sea lions, marine iguanas, and land iguanas in close proximity to sharks, rays, near the coast.
Bachas Beach – stunning 1-km white coral sand beach on the northern coast of Santa Cruz Island. Famous as a major nesting site for Pacific green turtles, it features turquoise waters, coastal lagoons with flamingos, and remnants of WWII US barges (hence the name), offering excellent swimming, snorkeling, and wildlife spotting.
07h50: Meeting point in Puerto Ayora
10h00: North Seymour Island walk
13h00: Lunch
14h00: “Las Bachas” Beach visit
16h00: Back in Puerto Ayora
(Schedule approximate & subject to change around GNP requirements & Captain's discretion given ocean conditions)
North Seymour Island was lifted from the ocean floor by a seismic event, reason why its low, flat profile.
Swallow-tailed gulls sit perched in ledges of the cliffs only a few meters high form the shoreline. A forest of Palo Santo trees stands just above the landing site, usually without leaves, waiting for the rain to bring them into bloom. Amongst the emblematic fauna of the island, you will be able to see sea lions, land iguanas and blue footed boobies. The trail turns inland where you will find active and dynamic colonies of both species of “magnificent” and “great” frigate birds.
Dry landing.
Las Bachas, a beautiful coralline beach located on the north shore of Santa Cruz Island, is the perfect place for practicing snorkeling, swimming or to simply enjoy the white soft sand & crystal clear ocean with very few fellow humans.
Several brackish lagoons only a few steps away from the sea are the feeding grounds of various large wading birds, from stilts to flamingos while taking care to watch out as you step for sea turtle nests.
Wet landing.

Transport not included:

You can choose to GLT domestic flights services upgrade for your Quito-Galapagos & inter-island Baltra-Isabela flights with these services included:
choosing best flights & purchasing confirmed tickets that fit the itinerary from the multiple airline sites (the websites & airport check-in kiosks can be klugey--we have staff on the ground that can go to the local offices as need be)

getting boarding passes to you before check-in (including sending staff to local offices if website not working)
tracking flight changes/updates through day of flight
this service is $50/ticket (if you don't want to deal with developing country hassles during your trip, well worth it ;-))
Transport between your Quito Hotel & Airport--on arrival from USA & back to UIO airport to catch Galapagos flight
ask your airport hotel about shuttle availability/schedule, especially overnight hours & if need to reserve & how call
Transport for free time excursions, whether you plan on your own or you ask your guide to plan and/or go with you is extra (usually nominal cost (see below) unless longer excursion)
If you go out on own, your 4-person family will fit in a taxi with one adult up front with driver (all are double cabin pickups).
Taxis are easy to hail on Santa Cruz for $2/ride in town.
In much smaller town on Isabela you will need to have guide or hotel make a call or reservation as many taxis don't work past 5 pm and hard to find on the streets.
If you invite your guide on a free time excursion & taxis are used, you will need two taxis to travel safely as one adult fits up front and one adult can be in back with the 2 children. (Note do not send children in taxi without an adult--goes without saying, even though Galapagos overall very safe.)
SIDE NOTE: TAXI SAFETY TIPS
We don't recommend "squishing" the kids in back with 2 adults.
Seat belts should be worn on any high speed journeys e.g. to Baltra airport. There are fatal accidents too often on this particular road unfortunately. You can ask your driver to slow down--you shouldn't be in this situation without your guide there to handle in any case.
These are our GLT exclusive tips included with your custom trip design.
These three PDFs were customized recently for a group trip we hosted in March attached here only as an example if you are ready to scan now.
These will be updated based on different climate in August & any other changes to conditions for your custom trip.

ABOUT GALÁPAGOS
From Galapagos Conservancy:
"The Galapagos Islands are home to some of the highest levels of endemism (species found nowhere else on earth) anywhere on the planet. About 80% of the land birds you will see, 97% of the reptiles and land mammals, and more than 30% of the plants are endemic. More than 20% of the marine species in Galapagos are found nowhere else on earth. Favorites include the giant Galapagos tortoise, marine iguana, flightless cormorant, and the Galapagos penguin — the only penguin species to be found in the Northern Hemisphere."
A bilingual Galápagos National Park-certified guide is with you on all excursions on land or in water to Galapagos National Park visit sites (as noted).
Most are Spanish/English-speaking, biology-trained, and deeply experienced
If you'd like your guide to join you for a meal before/after your tour, offer to pick up their meal and enjoy extra time to get to know the local people & culture.
You'll have dozens of species on your "wildlife seen" list by end of your tour
Expect daily sightings on land & in the ocean—Galapagos penguins, sea turtles, blue-footed boobies & many more
Galapagos.org is a great website to read up on different wildlife & landscapes on each island.
Wetsuits available for rent if you:
Tend to run cold
Prefer extra buoyancy
Want sun or jellyfish protection
Desired by most travelers in August one of coldest current months (temps ~60-71°F--colder around Isabela Island, warmer in central islands) so we’re happy to arrange one for you on each tour (usually extra nominal cost ~$10pp, recommend purchase for kids & bring with to ensure good fit. Adult suits readily available & save you suitcase space.)
Taxis during FREE TIME are easy & cheap (typically $1–$2)
additional drinks, food beyond what is included on tour menus
No fancy clothes needed—casual, comfy & island-ready
Expect warm weather with some light intermittent rain
We’ll send packing tips tailored to your specific travel dates
Pack light: a carry-on spinner wheels suitcase (w/ durable wheels) + day-sized backpack works great
Laundry available from hotels usually
We’ll send a custom packing list to help you prep with ease
No special vaccines required (malaria/yellow fever NOT required unless visiting mainland jungle) but check this list from CDC & our local travel vaccine clinic to check you are up to date on vaccines like:
standard vaccines like Tetanus, MMR, flu, COVID

Hepatitis A & B
Typhoid

Bring your personal first-aid needs, especially if you have allergies (e.g. EpiPen), joint support, etc.—some areas are remote

We’ll prioritize hotels with decent WiFi, but speeds can vary even with the satellite-based Starlink internet only rolling out recently--if this is critical factor for the hotels, please let us know upon booking.
Many boat tours and some land outings are off-grid though boats are starting to add Starlink satellite internet service which can still be spotty when cloudy/stormy or equipment outages (honestly, this can be a blessing to relax!)
We recommend downloading books, playlists, maps, and your Galapagos Adventure WeTravel "My Trips" app in offline mode in advance
Don’t forget your headphones & charged mobile devices—perfect for travel days or quiet moments on boats
After booking, you’ll complete a short online survey so we can track everything for you individually:

Dietary needs or allergies
Medical details & access needs
Passport info (required for Galápagos boat tours & we’ll confirm it’s valid for Ecuador entry)
Don’t have one or need to renew? No problem—it typically takes 6–8 weeks.
Flights to/from Galapagos
We’ll help select flights to ensure you can smoothly connect to all the Galapagos tours you select
Please don’t book Galapagos flights without checking with us first
REQUIRED travel interruption/international medical/medical evacuation insurance to be purchased ASAP as time limits for full coverage after first trip payments e.g. your international flights
we can recommend good options or even purchase for you as an add-on if you'd rather not deal with this
min. $250K international medical per person, $500K medical evacuation per person + trip interruption coverage for your trip costs as most are non-refundable.
Note airlines and credit cards do NOT have sufficient coverage in most cases--this is a remote destination with even lower developing country level medical care not available in the islands.
