Twenty six years ago Amy was hosted on her first Galápagos visit by then tourist yacht Captain (& future husband) Walter and have had our hearts & lives in both the Galapagos & the USA as we raised our family.
Over the last 10+ years we have been curating custom group trips on request which was re-launched in 2025 as Galapagos Local Tours LLC. We are registered in the USA & exclusively work with Ecuador Min-Tur-registered, locally-owned tours that we personally know offer the best & safest service. See our latest Google reviews.
Together, we've designed this land-based trip to share our favorite Galápagos places, wildlife around your interests of scuba, snorkeling, hiking and large animals (not bird-focused though a lot of Galapagos birds are quite large & interesting so we hope you enjoy those you'll meet). Galapagos is a mysterious, remote location with lots of differences even by island on how to get around so you'll see we've included guides (often required by Galapagos National Park) and other escorts, trusted drivers to make your travel as seamless as possible with lots of free time to explore on your own after quick orientations on each island.
Our excursions were chosen by Captain Walter with his most trusted Galapagos native family-owned tour operators from his experience as a yacht captain on Santa Cruz Island. And Amy is using her 500,000-visitor event center managing director background to keep track of the details to make everything smooth for us all.
As you explore, you’ll be meeting & supporting local residents vital to protecting this fragile ecosystem for future generations.
Questions? Amy’s happy to help as the VP of Client Services—before, during, or after your trip. Call/Text +1 402-429-1950 or WhatsApp call/text or email. We look forward to helping you explore Galapagos on this usually once-in-a-lifetime trip!
Photo: March 2026 Playa Cormorant new visit site opened in 2025 on western Isabela Island (L: flightless cormorant--only place in world to meet them, R: Galapagos penguin--endemic to the islands, less than 2000 individuals so sightings are rare)
TIP: When you’re ready to book or want to see pricing and payment options just click on the Book Now button always available at the top right of this itinerary.

FOR GALAPAGOS:
FLIGHTS
HOTELS w/ confirmation info
TOUR TIMES/MEETING POINTS
Any changes to Galapagos/Ecuador travel conditions/policies
Here are steps to complete starting 48 hours before your flight to Galapagos:
You can pre-register for your Transit Control Card (TCT) before your trip:
https://siiws.gobiernogalapagos.gob.ec/siicgg_web/
Use this website during weekday business hours for best results including with the $20 per person payment feature while IT staff on duty.
You'll need your first Galapagos hotel name and flight numbers.
Use your browser's Translate feature if needed (the site is in Spanish) but fill out the form in Spanish for best results. Can look at the form in your language on 2nd screen if needed while fill out in Spanish.
Select the second link on the left for TCT pre-registration.
We recommend using a computer rather than a mobile device if possible, as the website can be a bit glitchy.
If you're traveling with others on the same Quito or Guayaquil to Galápagos flight, complete a group registration to save time.
Before submitting, print or save the final confirmation screen showing everyone's names and QR code, just in case the website loses your information.
Don't worry if you can't complete it online. You can simply fill out the form at the airport on your departure day and pay the $20 TCT fee in cash. Pre-registering just speeds up the process so allow extra hour at least 3-3.5 hours before your flight if can't complete this online.
Complete your required Biosecurity Declaration within 48 hours of your Galápagos flight:
https://declaracion.abgalapagos.gob.ec/declaracion
Same website tips apply but this one is much less problematic and no payment required.
After completing the form, you'll receive a QR code that you'll need during check-in.
This is one of the two QR codes/documents you'll need for your Galápagos flight (the other is your TCT registration or airport-issued TCT).
Completing the declaration also lets you review restricted items before you travel.
TIPS:
Make sure your shoes & all gear are clean of mud/dirt and seeds.
Foods allowed should be factory-processed and sealed especially if include seeds. No fresh produce or meats allowed to protect the islands' ecosystem.
Instead of relying on the limited, often non-working airport kiosks.
Plan to arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before departure, just as you would for an international flight.
There are several additional steps before boarding your Galápagos flight, including:
QR codes for your TCT and bio-security declaration
Physical hand and/or xray scanning for biosecurity of items in your checked and carry-on luggage
Standard airline & baggage check-in and security
We've also found the self-service airline boarding pass kiosks can be limited & slow, are often only in Spanish, and occasionally lose their internet connection, requiring you to start over.
Once you're through check-in, relax, grab a snack/beverage before boarding as at most you'll get water on the approx. 1.25 hour flight, and get ready to enjoy your Galápagos adventure!
GETTING READY FOR YOUR FIRST GALAPAGOS EXCURSIONS
Your first Galapagos land & boat excursions will happen immediately upon arrival as you continue to travel to Isabela Island.
So as you select your clothes to wear & what to place in your day backpack for your flight, this is handy info!

NOTE: WITH THIS SERVICE CAN SHOW UP 2 HOURS BEFORE FLIGHT
by Galápagos native Tony Sotomayor
He will guide you personally through the extra steps at the UIO Quito airport to enter the Galapagos National Park as a UNESCO World Heritage-protected site:
Get Galapagos Transit Control Card (TCT) ($20pp cost included with tour) as part of the Galápagos ecosystem protections.
There is also extra baggage Galapagos bio-security inspection & declaration before you can complete normal check in with the airline & go through airport security.
He also has tight working relationships with the airlines to get your boarding passes & baggage tags without your having to be in the airline kiosk and counter lines.

You can choose to get live status of your flight's on-time status here.
You'll go about 800 miles to the west as the "blue-footed booby" flies today.
WELCOME to Ecuador's Galapagos Province--you are now entering the Galápagos National Park.
**DID YOU KNOW? 97% of this world-unique island archipelago is protected within the Galapagos National Park (GNP).
Here are the GNP rules for visitors so you can help keep this ecosystem safe:
Your guide today is Victor (Alberto) Rizzo....is that an Italian surname you'll have to ask him. Captain Walter of GLT has know Viktor since they grew up together.
ARRIVAL AT GPS BALTRA ISLAND AIRPORT
You will disembark down plane stairs onto the tarmac of this one-runway airport.
**PHOTO OP: great quick group photo spot with the plane on tarmac before continue walking on tarmac to airport building (stay in painted pedestrian area)

who will be displaying Galapagos Local Tours sign to take you to our reserved transport with planned stops. (his picture added here)
Galapagos will quickly relax you into a safe "small town" feeling.
Still, it's good practice on any transfers on the Galapagos as staff help with your luggage, always keep with you at all times:
valuables
passport, medicines, wallet, money belt etc.
personal backpack/bag
w/ tour essentials like sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, rain jacket, bottle of water etc.
in the unlikely case luggage is momentarily misplaced and/or hard to access what you need easily during that day's tour/transport.
NOTE: must depart by 1:30 pm to meet your speedboat ferry & get better non-reservable seats with ventilation

Your guide will help you through the multiple transports (guest pay cash):
airport bus $5pp
water taxi $1pp
(guide pays for self)

NOTE: ferry prices increased by $20-30pp as of August 11, 2026 with no notice (you can see the comments on We (heart) Galapagos Facebook group as an example.
Once we know price of your ferry (Navy sets price for each particular ferry based on their license status) we will need to pass along this price increase taken suddenly after about 20 years of no chance due to worldwide increased fuel prices.
You are booked on the ferry New Nena
Your guide will guide you through check-in which when you return you'll be doing on your own so good to note the process as he does it.
CONFIRMED 8/13/26
This is first of your two inter-island speedboat ferry rides.
Your guide will help you through the ferry check-in process at the pier including inter-island baggage inspections by the Galapagos National Park to avoid introduced species as each island's ecosystem is unique.
Watch your step as you navigate each pier, boat, dock--best to grab onto crew's forearms as everything is moving and not standard.
Give any heavy/awkward hand bags/backpacks for a moment to the crew for these transfers instead of trying to balance these as well as your own body as the water taxis often move.
Keep your hands inside the boats, you don't want a body part to get caught between boats.
There is a $1pp cash fee for the water taxi to get you out to the speedboat ferry anchored in the bay.
FERRY COMFORT TIPS:
choose seats at the back have more ventilation, need to be early & jockey to front of the lines on the pier/water taxis
take your seasick meds as directed if needed
drink water not sweet drinks like Gatorade/soda pop
have some food in your stomach that isn't greasy--lighter meal, piece of bread
most people are fine on the ferries, pop in your headphones & nap!
There is WiFi on most ferries--see signs, ask sailor
CONFIRMED 8/13/26
WELCOME TO ISABELA!
As your ferry comes into the town harbor, watch for penguins and blue-footed boobies on right side of the bay as you enter the town port on top of the open lava tunnels called Las Tintoreras.
Water taxi ride to pier - $1 cash pp
You will be met by a Spanish-language driver from Tropical Adventures (our niece Mayela is co-owner) at the pier
On the pier, while looking for your escort also please claim all your luggage as unloaded from the water taxi(s)
After payment of $10 cash entry tax per visitor payable upon entry on Isabela Island you can exit the pier and you'll roll your bags a short distance to your waiting transport to take you to your hotel.
See Concha de la Perla swim/self snorkel spot on right as you walk from pier to your waiting ride
During your ride, be sure to ask questions about the town as you go to get oriented--restaurants, cafes, shops, swim spots.
Be sure to ask where Tropical Adventures tour operator located for any snorkel gear for self-tours or tour questions you might have (our niece, Mayela, runs this local agency)
You'll pass by Amy's favorite espresso barista just past the agency and across the street called Pan & Vino.
Prepaid Room with included breakfast--confirmed again 8/13/26
Hotel has your passports for faster check-in & knows your arrival/departure times
Drake Inn is locally-owned beachfront hotel on the quiet end of the main town sand street, just 3 minutes’ walk to Puerto Villamil town center. No pool since located right on the beach!

We'll continue to proof your itinerary to make sure everything is correct as you begin your Galapagos adventure. Plus add some more pics!
Any questions? Just send Amy a WhatsApp text as you have been! Don't hesitate to call if urgent--we don't hear our texts always right away.
We'd love to see at least a picture a day to our WhatsApp as you go to see what are your "wow" moments!! Thanks Giuliano for starting this today with your volcano pics--wow!
Outdoor seating where they grill right in front of you.
Casual great BBQ, Ecuador-style with lots of meat & seafood choices including a multi-meat/seafood combination platter with hot coals brought table-side (see pic). Ask if they have lobster--the season just started!
This is actually my favorite breakfast place in town--including WONDERFUL crepes and good espresso drinks, smoothies etc. They have both inside A/C & outdoor seating in a nicely decorated cafe/bar with lots of windows.
Definately recommend checking out there menu early on, might be last day lunch option.
Since they don't open until 8 am (you have daily tours starting earlier) suggest for first night you check out their craft beer selection--they are even busier at night for this reason.
This eatery is proof that some of the best places to eat in town are not on the main town square or beach!

NOTE ON RESTAURANTS
We suggest restaurants we personally have tried & like--we aren't personally related to these owners or benefiting from these recommendations. (except for a few we know the owners as friends & let you know)
If you select other restaurants, please choose those that are busy for the safest food preparation--the health inspectors are NOT strict in Ecuador and food is often stored/reheated more than should be & we've even had family members get ill.
AVOIDING STOMACH ISSUES
you're on islands with non-potable water coming from the taps
use bottled water to brush your teeth--put a bottle right there to remember
eat cooked not fresh vegetables (avoid eColi etc. & uncontrolled pesticides)--ask for this substitute as you order as most plates come with fresh salad. Or ask for just avocado--that's a peeled vegetable that's awesome!
eat the inside of fresh fruits where peel has been removed (no grapes, berries)
fruit juices are wonderful (often made from frozen fruits) at clean/busy places that likely to use clean water/ice to maintain their good reputation--strive to try ~12 flavors during your trip!!
err on the side of fully cooked meats
if you do raw seafood, upgrade to best restaurant possible
ice--OK at well-trafficked tourist restaurants, would NOT do at local, cheap restaurants
water--best to do bottled that looks like original factory-sealed cap & look for non-Galapagos brands (USA, Europe, mainland Ecuador major brands, not the one with the baby on the bottle, ironically tastes terrible) as there are NO controls on water bottling on the islands (our nephew works in the water department)
TOUR CONFIRMED 8/13/26
Half-Day Hiking Adventure | Geological Wonders
Isabela Island is home to Sierra Negra, one of the most awe-inspiring volcanic formations in the Galápagos—and the most accessible.
Towering above the island’s southern highlands, Sierra Negra’s massive caldera and dynamic volcanic landscape offer a chance to witness the Earth in motion, with panoramic coastal views, lava flows, and even active fumeroles depending on your route.
Sierra Negra Descent to "Sulfur Mines"
Challenging Hike | For Adventurous Travelers
For this more intense trek, you'll descend into the Sierra Negra caldera to visit the “sulfur mines”—a natural thermal area with active fumeroles and colorful mineral deposits. This route gives you a closer look at volcanic activity, tectonic features, and the ever-changing earth beneath your feet.
· Total distance: ~7.4-8.7 miles round trip
· Terrain: Steep and rugged, can be hot and muddy.
Trail down/up the caldera is made from volcanic sand, pea gravel that can be a bit slippery on incline portion. In caldera you might walk on volcanic sand, ashes, and lava boulders as see in pics.
· Highlights: Steam vents, volcanic chemistry, surreal geology, and few crowds
With dimensions ranging from 25-37 miles wide and 4.4 to 6.1 miles in length, Sierra Negra is the largest and shallowest caldera in the Galápagos. Though often claimed to be the second largest caldera in the world (it's not), it still ranks among the top 50 largest calderas globally.
Its elliptical shape and geologic history—marked by repeated collapses, uplift, and deformation—make it one of the best places to learn about the volcanic origins of the islands.

Sierra Negra Sulfer Mines Tour Nov 2024
Open-air beachside restaurant for first full day.
Lots of fresh seafood, sushi, Ecuador cuisine dishes to choose from.
TOUR CONFIRMED 8/13/26
A chance to see the rare endemic Galapagos penguins (there were hundreds there earlier this week due to El Niño--very, very rare!) plus rays, sea turtles, and/or baby white-tipped sharks--by a different form of marine transport than all your other tours!
NOTE: This tour you'll be leaving any larger belongings on the beach so would just bring bare minimum with you what will easily go on the kayak, knowing could get wet.
The kayak tour DOES have wet begs you can put a couple valuables like your camera that can't get wet if you "capsize".
POST-TOUR IDEAS:
Kayak tour will end on beach in #2 below which means you are right by Concha de la Perla for a mangrove bay swim (first free time idea below).
If you'd like to also snorkel, can rent gear at kiosk as walk in, as there is quite a bit of wildlife in this protected mangrove bay that are feeding in this non-guided visit site.
SAFETY: watch for the current leaving the mangrove bay if the tide is going from high to low-good to swim together
NOTE: if do this would mean you give up the free transfer at end of kayak tour to your hotel. But there are taxis at the pier usually or someone there can call you one (~$2/ride in town)
DON'T MISS THIS IF DIDN'T ALREADY SEE IT ALL ON KAYAK TOUR--The kayak tour beach right by the ferry pier across from Concha entrance is a hot bed of Galapagos penguins, blue-footeed booby birds group-dive fishing (both amazing sights right now due to El Niño effect)
A swim in this calm public visit site of Concha de la Perla. This is a mangrove bay near the speedboat pier you arrived at.
Puerto Villamil beach is one of the most beautiful & longest in Galapagos--be sure to meet the baby iguanas on the lookout tower steps & fun to take walks different times of day or enjoy a cocktail for sunset. Watch out for the strong sun & strong rip currents year-round--don't swim alone.
Flamingo Lagoon is just behind the Tropical Adventures office--be sure to visit several times at different times of day to see varying amounts of flamingos with variation on how close they are to viewing boardwalk
Walk the main sand street of the village--there is a nice expresso cafe, good bakery, fresh empanadas, fresh coconut drinks kiosk and more plus a nice central park to explore
There is sometimes a fresh fruits bowl/smoothie food truck off the main sand street which makes HUGE bowls from wide variety of fresh fruits--try some you can't get at home!
5:30 pm - find a ~6pm sunset cocktail spot on the beach
See Self Tours PDF for more free time ideas for ideas or ask Amy or Mayela's office team if you're in the mood for something in particular.
PHOTO OPPS:
Take your classic picture with the ISABELA human-size letters at the "left side" of the beach as you walk onto the beach from town.
Also visit the often-baby marine iguanas on the steps of the wood lookout tower on the beach.
Vibrant modern dining experience with Mexican, healthy, vegetarian-friendly dishes, and a full bar.
On main street right in town--one of few restaurants we like that are near the main town square.
TOUR CONFIRMED 8/13/26
NOTE BEFORE LEAVE ON TOUR--HOTEL 10 AM CHECKOUT:
Before leave for your Tuneles tour, leave your bags for secure storage & check-out with the hotel staff who getting ready for breakfast.
There is an outdoor shower to the right of the entrance as you walk in that will be handy for after your tour today to freshen up before catching the ferry.
Half-Day Boat Tour | Snorkeling & Geological Walk | Isabela Island’s Hidden Gem
Venture into one of the Galapagos’ most spectacular underwater worlds on this unforgettable half-day speedboat excursion to Cabo Rosa, more commonly known as Los Túneles.
Only recently opened as an official visitor site by the Galapagos National Park, this tour combines world-class snorkeling, a short lava formation hike, and up-close encounters with iconic wildlife—both above and below the surface.
This is Isabela Island’s must-do daily marine tour on one of the newest boats on Isabela that happens to be owned by Walter's niece Mayela & her husband, Ramiro, who was born on Isabela. They run a leading travel agency focused on Isabela experiences.
Tour Highlights
🛥️ Boat Ride Along the Western Coastline
Departing from Puerto Villamil’s main town pier, enjoy a 40-minute speedboat ride along Isabela’s dramatic western coastline. Your journey offers scenic views of volcanic terrain and turquoise waters, with a brief stop at Roca Unión—a favored nesting site for masked boobies, often viewable from the boat.
🌋 Los Túneles Lava Formations
Arrive at the main attraction: Los Túneles, a surreal network of lava bridges, open tunnels, and natural arches formed by ancient volcanic flows from Sierra Negra Volcano.
Navigate the boat through this maze-like lava landscape
Disembark for a short 10–15 minute guided hike across the formations
Spot coastal birds resting or nesting among the arches
🤿 El Finado Snorkeling Site
End your tour with a peaceful snorkeling session in El Finado, a calm, clear-water cove tucked among mangroves.
Swim alongside sea turtles, reef fish, rays, and white-tipped reef sharks resting along the sandy bottom
If you’re lucky, your guide may help you spot seahorses hidden among the seagrass
Perfect for all skill levels thanks to its calm, shallow waters protected by the "tunnels" lava formations at the coast
Onboard Experience includes:
Towels
Snorkeling Gear
Digital photos/video taken by guide
Snack & basic non-alcoholic/non-sparkling beverages (advise of dietary requirements or beverage requests in pre-trip survey)
Note: schedule & stops subject to change due to Galapagos National Park restrictions & ocean conditions.
Options include:
Take a walk up/down the beach from the Drake Inn that runs beside town, lots of wildlife to see & get a light, non-greasy lunch for your ferry ride before your ride comes for you and your bags
While you're checking in for the ferry, this is a wildlife hotspot by the ferry pier at the moment due to El Niño for more penguin & blue-footed booby fish-dive bombing sightings, as you know from kayak tour--can be different each day!
TRANSFER CONFIRMED 8/13/26
REMINDER: The hotel will be happy to store your luggage during your am tour until your 2 pm speedboat ferry pickup.
Reserved transport with Spanish language escort from Tropical Adventures will pick you & your luggage up from the hotel & help you through the ferry check-in process.
You are reserved on the ferry SIGILOZA
After Galapagos National Park baggage inspection, with these tickets and your passport you can check in with the ferry on the pier (first kiosks are the boat staff).
You'll receive a boat lanyard to wear as your entry onto the ferry which you must put on now on the pier so crew can get you to the right ferry as all the ferries leave at same time.
You'll then need to walk a few more steps closer to the water still on the ferry pier to pay for a $1 water taxi ride for each of you & get a paper ticket for this.
Then look for your boat's line on the pier (people wearing the same lanyards, ask staff near ramps down to the water ferries if don't see your line) and try to stay at the front of this line & middle of water taxi seats so you can get the best seats in the 2nd-3rd row from the back for ventilation.
**Different this direction--With the wind pushing from Isabela to Santa Cruz, try to avoid the back row as can get diesel fumes.
CONFIRMED 8/13/26

Our favorite ceviche spot (when our own Captain Walter not cooking) featuring in-season local seafood--always great meal on a warm day.
Great 2nd floor open air deck, tropical decoration makes for relaxed vibe on quiet neighborhood street worth seeking out away from main tourist street.
Ceviche is chilled Latin American dish of raw fish "cooked" in lime/lemon juices plus cooked shrimp, lobster, octopus with finely chopped tomatoes, onion and cilantro. Usually served with crunchy, salty accompaniments like popcorn, corn nuts or plantain chips.
Alternative cooked dishes available.

Fun newer little bistro by young local chef Santiago--if you want a fancier last night dinner, this is the place & would make reservation as limited seating!! (see below link)
including Ecuador coast-style ceviche with peanut-flavored sauce, vegetarian tortilla soup, tuna-stuffed corviches, choice of chicken/fish/falafel tacos, shrimp pasta & passion fruit mousse.
Also find the remaining copy of your TCT card from your Galapagos entry will be asked for usually on exit.
**BEFORE you enter the Station, you'll need to pick up the required guide at one of the tour agencies just outside - $10pp.
Only way you get full access & really worth it to get the full info on what you are seeing at Galapagos's largest tortoise breeding center & research station.
Short 1/4-Day Land Tour | Conservation, Culture & Local Flavor
Cap off your Galapagos adventure with a quick tour designed to ground you in the heart of the Galapagos—where science, conservation, and community meet.
This ~2-3 hours experience including walking time includes:
a guided tour of the Charles Darwin Research Station
on way out can see Station's beach frequented by locals and sea lions where you can stop by during your free time without a guide or reservation
Tour Highlights
🔬 Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS)
Begin with a guided visit to the world-renowned Charles Darwin Research Station. Learn about the island’s pioneering conservation work, current projects, and legacy species like Lonesome George, the last of the Pinta Island tortoises.
Walk through active research labs and interpretive exhibits
See the largest collection of living giant tortoises and land iguanas from the different islands in managed enclosures
Take a peek at the baby tortoises from different islands being nurtured to help sustain populations of each island's endemic species
Walk through recently-renovated & expanded natural history exhibits exploring Galapagos's human & natural history to today, including the preserved Lonesome George himself
Gain context for the unique biodiversity and challenges of the Galapagos
🏖️ Station Beach (Playa de la Estación)
Take a peek if you'd like at this small beach just steps from the research center on the walk out, where you can stop by during your free time for a refreshing dip in the clear waters of Station Beach, a small, scenic cove with lava rocks, mangroves, and marine iguanas basking nearby.
A favorite for locals and sea lions alike so can be busy on the weekends (Tortuga Bay Beach is much larger, better on the weekends)
Beach is somewhat rocky, can be good to wear your water shoes if you return to swim on your own
NOTE: no services planned today but if you would like your taxi driver, Fausto, from your arrival day to take you to the market (described below) or anywhere else, just let us know as it can be hard to find a taxi on market day mornings.
Today happens to be weekly farmer's market day, so we've added this opportunity to the list!!
#1 suggestion only available on Saturdays: Brunch at "FERIA MIRAFLORES"
Year-round weekly farmer’s market featuring local seasonal produce & animal products
Open Saturdays ~7am - 2pm --earlier you go the better selection (taxis can be hard to get to/from market at peak hours so can ask hotel to call you one)
Enjoy a “brunch tour” of local cuisine prepared by local producers including tamales, empanadas, humitas, fritada, etc. (avoid uncooked farm cheese due to bacteria--it's not pasteurized--that make even native Captain Walter very ill)
Great day to enjoy the pool at your hotel if feeling like some quiet time.
Fun mini 2 swim spots excursion: Take water taxi ($1pp each way) from the town pier you arrived at from Isabela to Angermeyer Point to do short walk on marked trail to Playa de los Alemanes & Las Grietes (unique pristine waters between lava cliffs)--both good swim spots & see the original settlements by the Germans in WWII along the short trail.
Las Grietes there is a required guided tour available before the entrance for $10pp cash.
There is a nice restaurant called Eloise there overlooking the water right where the water taxis drop you off at Angermeyer Point might make a nice lunch/afternoon cocktails spot combined with this excursion.
Be sure to walk up & down the entire Darwin Avenue along the water & a bit up the main perpendicular Baltra Avenue starting up from the front of the ferry pier for all the best shopping/restaurants/bars & supporting local vendors rather than the airport souvenir shops!
Awesome daytime people watching stop----2nd floor open air cafe on top of Proinsular supermarket across from the ferry pier. Food nothing to write home about but can get a cold beverage.
The downtown piers are wonderful marine life watching spot after dark--baby sharks, fish, never know what you'll see.
See Self Tours PDF for Santa Cruz at end of this itinerary
NOTE: no restrooms or concessions at Tortuga Bay
Half-Day Adventure | 45 min. Hike each way | Swimming & Beach Marine Life Sightings | Optional Kayak (if available)
Pick up any beverages/snacks before heading out to one of the breathtaking beaches in the Galapagos—Tortuga Bay, named after the black sea turtles that nest along its shores.
This self-guided experience combines land and sea, giving you the chance to hike, swim, kayak, view wildlife and soak in the natural beauty of Santa Cruz’s southern coast.
Tour Highlights
🧭 Nature Walk to Tortuga Bay
Begin with a scenic ~45-minute guided mostly flat (except the stairs entrance) paver trail walk (approx. 2.5 km) through lava fields, dry forest, and cactus groves as our naturalist guide shares insights into the unique flora and fauna that thrive in this coastal ecosystem.
🌊 Playa Brava & Playa Mansa
Arrive at the dramatic white sands of Playa Brava, a long open beach with powerful surf and sweeping views where you'll find marine iguanas sunning and sea birds running & diving & no human swimming due to strength of currents (this is meaning of red flag posted—there have been visitor deaths)
Then continue to the calmer Playa Mansa, a sheltered bay with shade trees perfect for swimming, relaxing, and optional water activities where you sometimes encounter baby hammerhead sharks.
🛶 Kayaking (Optional)
Explore the tranquil Playa Mansa bay by kayak usually available for short rental. Paddle among mangroves, marine birds, and possibly encounter baby sharks or sea turtles in the shallows. (guide pays if requested)
🐠 Beach Wildlife Spotting
Marine life here is limited compared to deeper snorkel sites, but you may spot juvenile fish, rays, or turtles close to shore plus shore birds.
**Note: no bathroom or concession services at this pristine visitor site so use the restrooms before you go & stop by a store if you'd like to bring some snacks & beverages. Will need to bring all your trash out.
Opened March 2026 by the owners of Nazca Escencia Restaurant you tried on your first night in town.
The 2nd floor seating has some of the best views in Puerto Ayora of the coast & you can catch live events on their TVs so check it out when in mood for more hopping vibe at night without full bar craziness.
You'll find a more casual vibe & cuisine with inventive flavors by Chef Roger of Nazca (across street) in this contemporary casual restaurant.
Features fresh seafood among other twists on lighter appetizers & sports bar food like wings, short ribs. Also a great selection of beers and hand-crafted cocktails. Smoke-free space
Fun place to create your own mix of small plates, tapas-style meal.
Tell the taxi driver to take you to Pelican Bay, they are right on the corner behind the pelican sculpture.
Our favorite ice cream place on the islands-- try local farm-made gelato with rotation of local fruit flavors like naranjilla, mora or passion fruit you can't get at home in house-made waffle cones.
Also do espresso drinks, bakery items, housemade waffles decked out with gelato, fruit etc.

Our trusted driver, Fausto Zurito, who you met on your arrival to Galapagos is reserved to pick you up on time and get you and your luggage safely & on time across Santa Cruz Island to the pier to catch the Baltra Island water taxi. His cell +593-98-739-4464, only speaks Spanish.
TIP: Suggest have a nice coffee/beverage & hot meal at the GPS Baltra airport if you end up with extra time after check-in since there is no meal & limited beverage service on Galapagos flights. Also good idea to bring water & snacks.
After your taxi drops you off you head to the GPS Baltra Airport:
Catch the next water taxi
first stash your check-in bags on the roof of the water taxi from the upper pier
then go down the ramp to the water taxi (pay $1pp cash on board after depart)
On Baltra Island, staff will move your bags from water taxi roof to the airport bus
we HIGHLY RECOMMEND you watch your bags get put on your bus or do this bag transfer yourself from water taxi to bus to get your bags stowed below the your bus so your bags don't get lost or delayed even for a few minutes if end up on different bus.
TIP--one person does the bag transfer, other gets in the line to buy the bus tickets ;-)
Airport bus across Baltra Island ($5pp cash, buy ticket at booth before approach bus).
Anticipate these extra steps during your departing Galapagos flight check-in (you're a pro by now!)
Galapagos National Park bio-security inspection of your luggage (no natural souvenirs allowed!) Usually happens behind the scenes after you check your luggage.
Review 2nd 1/2 of your Galapagos TCT (Transit Control Card) you've been saving in your passport or as photo on your phone from entry.
TIPS AFTER CHECK-IN:
Can check out the few shops before security but there are many more shops/nicer shops after security
Would get through security as soon as possible so you don't get caught in a unexpected flux of other flights checking in
Lots of shops--my favorite is one of the first: 593 Origins
Get a hot beverage, hot meal--there is little to nothing beyond water on the flight to Quito
As you depart the Galapagos, please send us your favorite 20 photos of your trip along with any comments you have--we'd like to share the highlights of your trip in our "stories" ;-) Great time to pick those favorites to share with family/friends. Thanks!

ABOUT GALÁPAGOS
From Galapagos Conservancy:
"The Galapagos Islands are home to some of the highest levels of endemism (species found nowhere else on earth) anywhere on the planet. About 80% of the land birds you will see, 97% of the reptiles and land mammals, and more than 30% of the plants are endemic. More than 20% of the marine species in Galapagos are found nowhere else on earth. Favorites include the giant Galapagos tortoise, marine iguana, flightless cormorant, and the Galapagos penguin — the only penguin species to be found in the Northern Hemisphere."
A bilingual Galápagos National Park-certified guide is with you on all excursions on land or in water to Galapagos National Park visit sites (as noted).
Most are Spanish/English-speaking, biology-trained, and deeply experienced
If you'd like your guide to join you for a meal before/after your tour, offer to pick up their meal and enjoy extra time to get to know the local people & culture.
You'll have dozens of species on your "wildlife seen" list by end of your tour
Expect daily sightings on land & in the ocean—Galapagos penguins, sea turtles, blue-footed boobies & many more
Galapagos.org is a great website to read up on different wildlife & landscapes on each island.
Wetsuits available for rent if you:
Tend to run cold
Prefer extra buoyancy
Want sun or jellyfish protection
Desired by most travelers in August one of coldest current months (temps ~60-71°F--colder around Isabela Island, warmer in central islands) so we’re happy to arrange one for you on each tour (usually extra nominal cost ~$10pp)

No special vaccines required (malaria/yellow fever NOT required unless visiting mainland jungle) but check this list from CDC to check up to date on standard vaccines and less usual including Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid due to the poor drinking water e.g. most islands don't have potable water from the taps so easily infects food/drink.

Let us know about any health conditions or limitations ahead of time; this is a easy to moderate level of activity tour
Bring your personal first-aid needs, especially if you have allergies (e.g. EpiPen), joint support, etc.—some areas are remote
We’ll share a quick list of OTC items worth packing for sun, bugs, or motion
We’ll prioritize hotels with decent WiFi, but speeds can vary—satellite-based internet only rolling out recently
Many boat tours and some land outings are off-grid though boats are starting to add Starlink satellite internet service which can still be spotty when cloudy/stormy or equipment outages (honestly, this can be a blessing to relax!)
We recommend downloading books, playlists, maps, and your Galapagos Adventure trip app in offline mode in advance
Don’t forget your headphones & charged mobile devices—perfect for travel days or quiet moments on boats
